Understanding The SAIPA Qualification

The South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA) is a professional body that represents professional accountants in South Africa. SAIPA is recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and is responsible for ensuring that its members meet the highest standards of professional conduct and expertise in the accounting field.
SAIPA offers a range of professional qualifications that are recognised both locally and internationally. One such qualification is the Professional Accountant (SA) designation.
To become a Professional Accountant (SA), candidates must first meet the academic requirements, which include:
– Financial Accounting 3;
– Taxation 1;
– Auditing 1 OR Internal Auditing 2 OR Internal Control and Code of Ethics;
– Corporate Law 1 OR Commercial Law 2; and
– Management Accounting
Once the academic requirements have been met, candidates must then complete one of three practical requirements, including:
1. A minimum of three years’ supervised training at an Accredited Training Centre (ATC) (as a registered Learnership with FASSET), documented in the Institute’s official training logbook, regularly updated by the Trainee Accountant and the Training Centre principal, and monitored on an annual basis by a SAIPA nominated Monitoring Officer

2. Six years’ relevant, verifiable experience based on Institute’s official training logbook and verified by current and previous employers

3. Training programme from other accredited professional accountancy bodies – i.e. SAICA, ACCA, CIMA.
After completing the practical experience requirement, candidates must then pass a thorough professional evaluation, which includes a written exam as well as an oral presentation. The purpose of this evaluation is to test the candidate’s knowledge, skills, and competency in the field of accounting.
Upon successful completion of the professional evaluation, candidates are awarded the Professional Accountant (SA) designation and become members of SAIPA. As members of SAIPA, Professional Accountants (SA) are required to adhere to a strict code of ethics and are subject to continuous professional development and education requirements.
The Professional Accountant (SA) qualification offered by SAIPA is a highly respected and internationally recognised designation that represents the highest standards of professional expertise and conduct in the field of accounting. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification can expect to have a rewarding and fulfilling career in the dynamic and challenging field of accounting.
